As a parent, you want the best for your child’s health—including their smile. But when is the right time for a child to see an orthodontist? The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. Why so early? The answer lies in something called Phase 1 treatment—an early, proactive approach that can make a big difference in your child’s long-term dental health.
At Spring Cypress Dental, we’re committed to educating families about the benefits of early orthodontic care. Here’s what you need to know.
Why Age 7 Is the Ideal Time?
By age 7, most children have a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth. This transitional stage is when an orthodontist can spot subtle problems in jaw development, bite alignment, and tooth eruption—even if all the adult teeth haven’t come in yet.
Catching issues early gives us the opportunity to guide proper development and potentially avoid more invasive treatment down the road.
What Is Phase 1 Orthodontic Treatment?
Phase 1 treatment—also called early interceptive treatment—is orthodontic care provided while a child still has baby teeth. The goal isn’t necessarily to straighten all teeth, but to:
- Address bite problems such as overbites, underbites, or crossbites
- Guide jaw growth to improve facial symmetry
- Make room for incoming permanent teeth
- Reduce the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
- Help eliminate habits like thumb sucking or tongue thrusting
Treatments during this phase may include expanders, partial braces, space maintainers, or removable appliances, depending on the child’s needs.
Does Every Child Need Phase 1 Treatment?
No—not every child will need early orthodontic intervention. In many cases, an orthodontist will recommend simply monitoring your child’s development over time. However, if there are noticeable problems with your child’s bite, jaw alignment, or spacing, starting treatment early can make future treatment shorter and more effective.
What Happens After Phase 1?
After Phase 1 treatment, most children enter a resting phase, during which we monitor their growth and allow the rest of their permanent teeth to erupt naturally. Once all adult teeth are in place—typically around age 12–14—Phase 2 treatment (such as full braces or aligners) may be recommended to refine alignment and bite.
Benefits of Early Orthodontic Evaluation
- Prevents more complex problems later
- May reduce or eliminate the need for future extractions or surgery
- Builds a healthy, confident smile early in life
- Gives parents peace of mind
